Preparing for Surgery

It is especially important to familiarize yourself with the following instructions before your scheduled procedure. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in the cancellation of your procedure. Our office will contact you via text and phone a few days before your procedure to confirm your appointment, discuss pre-operative instructions verbally, and address any questions.

PLEASE PROVIDE THIS INFORMATION TO YOUR DRIVER SO THEY ARE PREPARED FOR THE DAY OF SURGERY

For all procedures:

  • You will be provided with detailed post-operative instructions on the day of your surgery. Instructions will be given to you or your guardian/escort. There will be an opportunity to ask any questions at the time of patient pick up with a nurse.
  • You may brush your teeth prior to your appointment.
  • If prescribed medication, it may take up to a day for the pharmacy to process it. Allow at least 6 hours for the prescription to be filled. All prescriptions are sent electronically. Changes to the pharmacy location are not possible on the day of surgery.
  • Consider having over the counter ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) available for pain relief. You may also want to have soft foods such as mashed potatoes, applesauce, yogurt, pudding, or soup ready for after your procedure.
  • Pain may persist for 10-14 days, with the third and fourth days typically being the most uncomfortable and swelling may peak during this period.
  • Plan to take 1-3 days off for a single tooth procedure and 3-5 days for multiple tooth procedures from work or school. Our office can provide you with an excuse note, if needed.

If you are being sedated:

  • Do not eat or drink anything, including water, for 6 hours before your procedure. A sip of water to take medications is ok.
  • Drink plenty of water the night before to facilitate easier IV placement and reduce post-sedation nausea.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing, preferably short-sleeved for easier placement of the IV and monitors that are utilized throughout your procedure. Secure footwear is recommended.
  • Avoid wearing contacts, makeup, jewelry, and fingernail polish if possible.
  • Refrain from using marijuana for at least one week before your procedure, as it can lessen the effects of sedation.
  • If you are under the age of 18, you must have a parent or legal guarding present at the time of your procedure. If you are over 18, a responsible adult must accompany you. Your procedure WILL NOT start until your ride is present.
  • No Uber or Lyft drivers are allowed. THE DRIVER AND VEHICLE MUST REMAIN ON THE PREMESES FOR THE ENTIRE DURATION OF THE PROCEDURE.

If you develop a cold, sore throat, fever, upset stomach, diarrhea, or anything abnormal prior to surgery, please notify our office as soon as possible at (269)323-1527.

DUE TO PRIVACY LAWS, AND THE PRIVACY OF OUR PATIENTS AND STAFF, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE ANY VIDEO OR PHOTOS UNTIL YOU LEAVE THE PREMESES. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION.
